Respite from heat as rainfall expected in Bengaluru this month: IMD

The IMD had previously noted that extensive heat and high temperatures were due to global weather phenomenon known as El Nino.

As dry stretch in Bengaluru crosses the 140-day mark with no rain since November 21 last year, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is expecting a spell of rainfall this April to beat the heat.

February, this year, witnessed above average temperatures, while March recorded no rainfall.

According to A Prasad, scientist at IMD Bengaluru, “From January to April, even if it’s normal rainfall, we should have had at least 5 cm till now. But it is zero… light to moderate rainfall is expected in April next week.”

The IMD had previously noted that extensive heat and high temperatures were due to global weather phenomenon known as El Nino.

The term El Niño (Spanish for ‘the Christ Child’) refers to a warming of the ocean surface, or above-average sea surface temperatures, in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It is associated with high pressure in the western Pacific. El Nino adversely impacts the Indian monsoons.

As per the IMD data, a similar period of negligible rainfall occurred between December 2006 and March 2007. For the month of April, the data recorded maximum rainfall of 323.8 mm in 2001, while 2006-2007 recorded about 104 mm rainfall.

The last time Bengaluru received rain was on November 21.
